The Train Show at NYBG Showcases Iconic New York Structures For The Holiday Season
The holiday season for many is denoted by the flavors of the winter season—warm spices, large chunks of roasted meat, a trip to Arthur Avenue for special imported and housemade ingredients, or gingerbread, coquito and an abundance of sweet treats—for other's it’s a visit to the New York Botanical Garden's annual Train Show.
Since 1992, designer Paul Busse has created incredible landscape displays at The Train Show using organic materials—he highlights landscapes and iconic structures of New York City, notably Yankee Stadium, the Statue of Liberty, The Brooklyn Bridge, and the newest addition to this year's exhibit includes the lower Manhattan skyline and One World Trade Center. It also features nearly half a mile of railway track hosting over a dozen large-scale model trains.
Programming runs November 17th through January 21st and includes activities such as A Cappella holiday music, a tree and menorah lighting ceremony, poetry readings and family friendly-films.
According to Thomas Mulhare, Director of Public Education at The New York Botanical Garden, one of the best ways to enjoy the Train Show is at the Bar Cart Nights, “there are roaming dancers, singers, and acrobats accompanying visitors as they enjoy a wintry stroll around the Garden. For warming up, we have bigger and better Holiday Fire Pits,” he adds, “others will enjoy watching ice carvers or singing along with Dueling Pianos.”
For the first time ever, the Bar Cart Nights will have food offerings in addition to their usual programming and cocktails, by way of a partnership with The Bronx Night Market. A line up of six rotating sweet and savory vendors will be at the entrance of the show each weekend, offering seasonal and global flavors including tamales, apple cider donuts, vegan baked goods, empanadas, Filipino barbecue, fried chicken with potatoes waffles, Thai-Puerto Rican fusion, upscale burgers and more. Showcasing a taste of the Bronx Night Market, a food festival series which launched at Fordham Plaza this past June.
“This partnership greatly increases the available food options for our visitor and roots us deeper into our Bronx community, a place that we are very proud to call home,” says Mulhare.
