There survives a little-known Spanish proverb which says, “The belly rules the mind.” This sentiment could not ring truer than during the spring and summer months in the Bronx.

Now, thanks to a recent announcement from Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.’s press office, your belly has that a little more control. A partnership between the car-sharing company Zipcar and the borough’s tourism council is offering Zipcar members, known as Zipsters, 15% off meals when they rent an automobile and visit select Bronx restaurants, adding value to the firm’s membership program.

Publicized at the commencement of Bronx Week 2017, the news comes just in time for locals to take advantage of the warm weather by celebrating delicious meals one can only get from such places as Riverdale’s Blackstone Bar & Grill, Little Italy’s Catania Pizzeria and Café, and City Island’s Bistro SK, just to name a few—eateries that are slightly more difficult to reach by simply taking the subway.

This is not the first-time Zipcar has partnered with established Bronx institutions. The car company has been offering discounts to college students who are enrolled in schools like Fordham University and Bronx Community College, making it easier and comparatively more affordable to get around town. This time, however, the aim is to increase traffic to restaurants, shops and galleries that are nationally recognized, but whose brick-and-mortar locations are off the beaten path.

“Our borough is home to some of the greatest restaurants and eateries the city has to offer,” said Borough President Diaz. “This partnership between the Bronx Tourism Council and Zipcar will provide epicureans with an opportunity to explore the great tastes our borough has to offer. I congratulate Zipcar on this tremendous new partnership with the Bronx Tourism Council, and I look forward to working with them in the future.”

The 30-year-old iconic food boutique Cerini Coffee & Gifts on Arthur Avenue is also getting in on the fun, offering Zipsters deals on in-store merchandise like luxurious espresso machines, kitchenware and fine Italian treats at the discounted rate.

Another notable and historic landmark participating in the promotion is the beautiful Bronx Opera House Hotel. A New York City staple, this stunning boutique hotel is located in the gently gentrifying South Bronx and was once home to show business greats like Harry Houdini and the Marx Brothers.

More deals on local merchandise and services at other cultural and fitness centers taking part include the Bronx Museum of the Arts on the Grand Concourse, the New York Botanical Garden on Southern Boulevard, Focal Point Gallery on City Island Avenue and Sweet Water Dance & Yoga studio on Gerard Avenue. These and more can be found on the official Zipcar Bronx Destination Guide page (Zipcar.com/bronxguide).
