While you may have missed celebrating Women’s Equality earlier this week, emBRAZEN Wines used the occasion to launch their new line of wines that celebrate women who made bold, historic change. The labels feature a heroic cast of women including Nellie Bly, Celia Cruz, and Josephine Baker. And here’s the innovative twist – you don’t have to read about their histories, let these legendary women tell you about it themselves!

By downloading the Living Wine label app and pointing it at their portraits, augmented reality allows these women to share their amazing stories with you and your fellow wine drinkers. The big question is how do you choose: your favorite historic figure or favorite varietal? Baker is a Red blend, Bly is a Cabernet Sauvignon and Cruz is a Chardonnay—each bottle will retail at $15.99.

Olivia Teutschel is the winemaker for emBRAZEN wines and she says that her hope for these is wines is to “spark conversation among friends, family, co-workers or even in the wine aisle. I’m proud to have crafted these wines, providing a bold and delicious canvas [for] their voices to be heard.”

While all three featured women have an intertwined history with New York City, both Bly and Cruz are buried in the Bronx’s Woodlawn Cemetery & Conservancy.

Bly (born Elizabeth Jane Cochran) was a groundbreaking journalist best known for her expose on the treatment of women in asylums by committing herself and witnessing the atrocities firsthand. She also famously traveled around the world in 72 days.  Cruz (born Úrsula Hilaria Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso), the Queen of Salsa, rose to the top of her genre in Cuban and Latin music—a field that was dominated by men—recorded 23 gold albums.

emBRAZEN Wines has also launched Take up the Torch, a program seeking nominations for women who are driving change in their own communities. The winner, to be announced on next year’s International Women’s Day—May 8, 2019, will receive a $25,000 grant to continue their work and make a lasting impact.
